Eduardo Campos was making a run for the presidential win in Brazil as a first time presidential candidate. The lifelong socialist was bred from a family connected into politics. On Wednesday, Campos was headed to campaign in numerous events. The candidate boarded a Cessna Citation with six others, while steady rain and stormy rain gathered. It is potentially the weather that may attribute to the plane crashing into a residential area of Santos. Witnesses recalled the crash, one told the New York Times it was like something out of a war. Charred body parts could be seen scattered at the scene, as residents gathered after hearing the fiery crash.
The plane was reportedly trying for a landing, when the pilots made a turn to avoid weather conditions. Air traffic control states they lost signal with the plane.
From the crash siteOfficials have not advised if any residents were killed or injured when the plane crashed into the residential neighborhood, hitting several houses. On the plane, all seven aboard were killed. In addition to Campos; two pilots, a campaign cameraman, photographer, and two senior campaign aides were on the plane. In light of the tragic event, President Dima Rousseff has called for three days of national morning, atop of canceling all campaign events. In a statement the president stated, the whole of Brazil is mourning.
On Campos website for his campaign, messages poured in, speaking of a man who committed to the ideas of a better world, and building community unity.
Rousseff and another presidential top candidate,Acio Neves, have suspended their campaigns following the tragedy and passed their condolences to the family, friends and all those who respected Campos. One person shook up by the incident was Marina Silva. The former 2010 presidential candidate was to board the plane with Campos, but opted for a commercial flight with additional aides. Silva has been a fierce critic against Rousseffs government, and placed her support behind Campos.
Campos is survived by his five children, and his wife, Renata Campos.
